Why Your Last Paystub Is Not a Substitute for a W-2
A paystub is an estimate, not a final tax statement
A final paycheck may show year-to-date wages and withholding, but it may not reflect every year-end adjustment. Employers issue Form W-2 to report annual wages and taxes withheld.
What can change?
Taxable fringe benefits, retirement contributions, corrections and other payroll adjustments can affect W-2 amounts. A paystub may also omit income from other employers or sources.
Avoid preventable filing problems
Filing from estimated figures can lead to an incorrect return, an amendment or delays. Compare your W-2 with your records and contact the employer about errors.
If a W-2 is missing
Request the form from your employer and consult current IRS instructions on missing or incorrect Forms W-2. The IRS has specific procedures, including Form 4852 in qualifying circumstances.
